Terms of Use

The service

Patterns is an app for training chess tactics: rated puzzles, a daily puzzle, themed sets, Storm, the Journey, and leaderboards. We may improve, change or retire features over time. If we ever stop offering Patterns altogether, we'll tell you in advance.

Your account

• You need an account to play. Give us accurate details, keep your sign-in secure, and tell us if you think someone else is using it.
• You must be old enough to agree to these terms where you live, or have a parent or guardian agree for you. See the Privacy Policy for ages.
• You can delete your account at any time from the app. Here's how.

Usernames

Your username is public to other players. Don't choose one that impersonates someone, is offensive, or infringes anyone's rights. We may change or remove a username that breaks this rule.

Fair play

Ratings, Storm scores and the Hall of Fame only mean something if everyone plays them. You agree not to:

• use a chess engine, another person, or any other help while playing rated puzzles, Storm or anything that counts toward a leaderboard;
• automate play, or send the service requests other than through the app;
• interfere with the service, probe it for weaknesses, or try to reach data that isn't yours;
• copy, resell or redistribute the app, or our puzzle selections, as a service of your own.

We may remove results, reset a rating, take you off leaderboards, or suspend an account that breaks these rules. If we do, we'll tell you why, and you can reply to contest it.

Patterns Pro

• Some features — such as unlimited Journey hearts, board themes, engine review and past daily puzzles — need a Patterns Pro subscription. The free features stay free.
• Subscriptions are bought through the App Store or Google Play and billed by them. The price, the billing period and any free trial are shown before you confirm.
• Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. A free trial turns into a paid subscription when it ends, unless you cancel before.
• Cancel from your App Store or Google Play subscription settings. Deleting the app or your Patterns account does not cancel it. How to cancel.
• Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their policies. This doesn't limit any right you have under consumer law.

Our content, and what it builds on

The app, its design, the ghost, and the text are ours or our licensors', and these terms don't give you ownership of them. We grant you a personal, non-transferable licence to use Patterns on devices you own or control, for as long as you follow these terms.

Patterns stands on open chess work. Puzzles come from the Lichess puzzle database, released into the public domain (CC0). Engine analysis is computed by Stockfish, free software under the GNU GPL v3, running on our servers.

Warranties and liability

We work hard to keep Patterns available and correct, but we provide it as it is and can't promise it will always be uninterrupted or free of errors. To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for losing rating points, streaks or progress.

Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, for gross negligence or wilful misconduct, or any other liability that can't be limited by law — and nothing takes away the rights you have as a consumer.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. We'll change the date at the top, and for changes that matter we'll let you know in the app before they take effect. If you keep using Patterns after that, the new terms apply; if you don't agree, you can delete your account.

Governing law

These terms are governed by Italian law. If you're a consumer living in the European Union, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of your country, and you can bring a claim in the courts where you live.

If you got Patterns from the App Store

These terms also apply, and take precedence where they differ:

• These terms are between you and Reactiive SRL only, not Apple. We, not Apple, are responsible for Patterns and its content.
• Your licence is limited to using Patterns on Apple-branded devices you own or control, as the App Store Terms of Service allow.
• Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for Patterns.
• If Patterns fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price, if any; to the extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for Patterns.
• We, not Apple, are responsible for any claims about Patterns — product liability, failure to meet legal or regulatory requirements, and consumer protection claims — and for investigating, defending and settling any claim that Patterns infringes someone's intellectual property.
• You confirm you're not in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated as supporting terrorism, and you're not on a US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
• Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and, once you accept them, may enforce them against you.
